In the News: Connecticut Health Foundation on Trayvon Martin and Disparities
Stan Simpson’s column in the Hartford Courant today is about the tragedy of Trayvon Martin’s murder. He talked to Connecticut Health Foundation (CT Health) consultant Loren Harris, who brought in the issue of health disparities.
“Black males will always be viewed as American society’s primary threat,” said Harris, based in New Jersey. “We’ve been bamboozled into thinking that black manhood equals “threat,” that black manhood equals “suspicion” and someone we should be wary of … . And some black people view black males that way (too) because we’ve internalized these stereotypes and mythologies about black manhood.”
