Foundation to Select Twenty Connecticut Residents to Participate in the One-Year Program NEW BRITAIN (January 23, 2008) - The Connecticut Health Foundation (CHF) is now accepting applications for the 2009 Health Leadership Fellows Program, which is designed to foster, support and promote a generation of leaders committed to eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities in Connecticut President & CEO Patricia Baker announced Friday.The program’s application deadline is May 2, 2008. “The Foundation is dedicated to eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities in Connecticut and we believe cultivating leadership among those people who receive unequal health care and report poor health outcomes will be an effective strategy,” said Baker. The Leadership Fellows Program is a one-year (September 2008 to June 2009) knowledge and skill-building program designed to create leaders, particularly racial and ethnic community leaders, who represent a variety of public and private sectors in public policy, health practice, health care administration, community, law, business and commerce, advocacy, academia, or any other related field. Fellows, who will be selected through a competitive process, must make a one-year commitment to attend two weekend retreats and monthly seminars and other education activities. Each fellow also will receive a stipend of $1,500 to aid in their personal or professional development.In addition, those who are employed by a nonprofit organization will receive a $500 gift for their employer. The fourth class of fellows is expected to include up to 20 Connecticut residents whom represent various professional and educational backgrounds. They include women and men whose professional work includes:social workers, physicians, nurses, advocates, community leaders, researchers, administrators, educators, and epidemiologists. Eligible applicants must: - Be a resident of Connecticut (or his/her primary work must directly impact the people of Connecticut).
- Have experience or interest in working to create equal opportunity for all Connecticut residents and to improve the quality of life for those who have been historically un-served or underserved.
- Show strong evidence of leadership experience or potential for leadership, as demonstrated by community service, life experience and formal education.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of and potential impact of racial and ethnic health disparities on health status, community stability, and the economy of Connecticut.
- Able to commit to full participation in all Fellows Program activities.
