Connecticut Health Foundation statement on Senate passage of proposed federal cuts to Medicaid

HARTFORD, Conn. (July 1, 2025)Connecticut Health Foundation President and CEO Tiffany Donelson issued the following statement in response to the Senate passage of the domestic policy bill. The proposal could become law if it is approved by the U.S. House of Representatives and signed by the president.

If this proposal becomes law, thousands of Connecticut residents would be at risk of losing their health care coverage and would face new barriers to getting and staying covered. Our state would be forced to devote significant resources to creating new administrative processes while losing millions of dollars that currently support health care for people in our communities. Our hospitals and other health care providers would face cuts in payment while having to find ways to care for more uninsured state residents.

Medicaid is a critical source of health care coverage for more than one in five Connecticut residents. It covers one in three public school students and two thirds of nursing home residents. It covers people in every city and town in our state. Research has clearly shown that Medicaid coverage has long-term health and economic benefits. Deep cuts to Medicaid would be devastating to our communities.

We are grateful for the commitment Connecticut leaders have shown to ensuring that Medicaid is available to those who need it. If this proposal becomes law, we stand ready to help find solutions to minimize the deep harms that would result.
