What We Fund

The Fundamentals

If you are seeking a grant from the Connecticut Health Foundation, you must meet the following criteria:
  • You must be a tax-exempt organization under Section 501 (c) (3) of the federal Internal Revenue Code.
    • If you are not a tax-exempt organization, you must be supported by a tax-exempt organization acting as a fiscal agent.
  • Alternatively, you must be recognized as a public entity of the state or local government.
Please note that we do not support national grant applications, though we will fund organizations conducting projects in Connecticut that directly impact state residents, or add knowledge to one of our priority areas.
  • Your initiative must address one or more of our strategic objectives under our priority areas:
    • Health Equity
    • Oral Health
  • Your initiative must fall under one of our grant types:
    • Our ideas (Requests for Proposal)
    • Your ideas (Outside solicitations)
    • General Operating Support grants (grants to existing grantees)
    • President’s Discretionary Grant Awards
  • Your initiative must represent systems change
  • In most cases, our grant application process includes three steps starting with a telephone call briefly describing your idea. Upon reviewing your idea, the foundation may invite you to submit a concept paper. From there, if your idea is closely aligned with one of our priority areas, we will invite you to complete a grant proposal by one of our quarterly deadlines. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Other Considerations

We look for organizations that, in addition to meeting funding criteria, also:
  • Approach their initiatives in a collaborative manner and see their relationship with CT Health as a partnership
  • See projects as a learning process
  • Have clear goals and objectives
  • Display bold thinking, innovative ideas and a willingness to take risks

Previous: Our Priority Areas Next: What We Do Not Fund

What We Do Not Fund

The Connecticut Health Foundation does not fund:
  • Construction, alteration, maintenance of buildings or building space, unless specifically allowed in an RFP
  • Tuition or awards to individuals
  • Billable services provided by physicians or other health care professionals
  • Capital projects, endowments or chairs associated with universities and medical schools
  • Projects that focus on residents living outside the state of Connecticut
  • Lobbying efforts or other efforts that may directly influence the outcome of specific municipal, state or federal elections, legislation, or regulation
As an organization, CT Health determined that our resources are best invested in initiatives that support lasting change for the greatest number of Connecticut residents. (Learn more about our Theory of Change) As a result, resources to support direct services and charitable care are limited. If you have a question about whether your project is eligible that has not been answered on this site, please contact us at grantsmanager@cthealth.org.
