This month’s advocacy newsletter includes resources related to HR 1, the federal law often called the “one big beautiful bill act” and key changes taking place to Medicaid eligibility. Starting Oct. 1, many immigrants who currently qualify for Medicaid will no longer be eligible because of changes in HR 1.
Learn about HUSKY Health and public charge changes
On Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m., the HUSKY 4 Immigrants and Protecting Immigrant Families coalitions are hosting a call to share updates on the new public charge rule and changes to HUSKY Health that take effect Oct. 1, as well as other issues affecting immigrant families in Connecticut. The call is meant for advocates and community members and Spanish interpretation will be available.
Understanding who is affected by coverage changes for immigrants
The Protecting Immigrant Families Coalition has a helpful chart that explains how people with different immigration statuses will be affected by federal policy changes, including HR 1. The chart is organized by immigration status and covers changes to programs related to health, nutrition, tax credits, and early childhood.
Fact sheets on coverage for immigrants in CT
The HUSKY 4 Immigrants coalition recently published fact sheets that explain what coverage is available to Connecticut residents regardless of immigration status and what is changing for some immigrants on Oct. 1.

HR 1 resource hub
The National Council for Mental Wellbeing has a helpful hub for resources related to HR 1. It includes a timeline of key implementation dates and a lot of resources related to implementation, work rules, and eligibility redeterminations.

New DSS work rules website
The Connecticut Department of Social Services recently launched a new website dedicated to the new Medicaid work rules that take effect Jan. 1. It includes information on what the rules are, who will be affected, and what steps people can take now.

DSS resources for community partners
DSS also released a toolkit with information that organizations can share about the new HUSKY work rules. The resources are available in English and Spanish.
Updated HUSKY D messaging kit
The Connecticut Hospital Association recently updated its messaging materials related to the new Medicaid work rules. The materials include a fact sheet on what’s changing, a flowchart to explain who is affected, information for health care providers and community organizations, and graphics that can be shared on social media. The materials are available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Organizations are welcome to add their own logos to the materials before sharing.
