Obesity is still one of the greatest health challenges in the African American and Hispanic communities, both locally and nationally. Many strategies and programs have been created to combat the prevalence of obesity; unfortunately, many of the strategies don’t fully succeed because the African American and Hispanic communities are not involved in the development of the strategy.

Sponsored by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the one-day “Step into Wellness” project incorporates “stepping,” the art of synchronized movement, which takes the form of foot stomping by a designated group before an audience. Stepping is derived from African American culture and requires practice to perfectly synchronize the group or team’s movements, and has grown in popularity in urban areas.
